Why Romance?

Reading has always been an important part of my life. Books gave me worlds to visit, friends to make, and ideas to explore. I read ahead of most kids in my class and yes, I was the one kid who got excited when the teacher said we could read silently to ourselves.

I don’t remember when I picked up my first romance. It had to be about the time I was allowed out of the children’s section at the public library. I can’t even tell you the title of the first romance I read. All I can tell you is that it started my whole love affair with the genre. I began to devour every book I could find. There is something about the idea of finding that one person who understands the simplicity and complexity that makes you special.

Historical romances won my heart early on. It may have something to do with my dad’s love of Bonanza and Gunsmoke. I used to dream of being Miss Kitty and running off with Marshal Dillon. Western romances took my breath away, but when I discovered Hannah Howell , Scottish/Irish romances took over

It was around 1994 or 95 when I picked up a book that had an interesting theme. I later learned that this genre was called paranormal. romance. If I loved romance on a whole, then paranormal was by far my favorite sub-genre. I picked up any book I could which would fall into this category. Ghosts, weres, shifters, zombies, you name it, I read it.

When I began reviewing at Coffee Time Romance & More, I discovered a whole new world! Not only did I meet friends who shared my passion for books (this is where I met Hollie), but there were sub-genres I wouldn’t have dared pick up before this. With the risque covers and titles containing sexual innuendos, I fell in love with erotica and erotic romance as well as GLBT romance. Slowly, I climbed out of my shell to begin a wild and passionate affair with these also.

To this day, if you look at my bedside table, you never know what you will find on it. From westerns to historicals to contemporary or paranormal and everything in between have the chance of being there. Currently, I’m re-reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (for the 30th time at least) and I have an ARC from Saranna DeWylde on my tablet that I’m reading when I’m on break at school. I can’t even begin to tell you how many erotica, erotic romance, BDSM, and GLBT titles are on my tablet. Most are fairly quick reads so I will often read one or two before bed

As you can see romance has always been a big part of my life. So, tell me which sub-genre is your absolute favorite? Why do you love it so? Talk to me! Let’s discuss books 🙂

Learn something new everyday

An old saying, I know, but a good one to aim at, the knack to it is recognising when you are learning something new. It doesn’t have to be something complex and academic, just something you didn’t know yesterday.

So now you asking, “What on earth learning has to do with romance books?” It’s easy. When you write you research, the same goes when you edit, but that is still purposely going to find information. So, in some ways, it could still be called academic. What I’m talking about is the everyday things you come across that make you think “well I didn’t know that” or “oh, here we do it like that or say it like this”.

To us, that’s as important as any research because you’re learning about people and places and the differences between them. Which is one of the things that improves your writing craft. It’s one of the aspects of reading and editing we enjoy the most. In editing, it can be better because you get a chance to ask questions and learn everything your author knows, or sometimes tell the author how it is different where you live, or know about, giving them the chance to learn something knew as well. It’s one of the ways to make editing fun, making about learning and developing and I have to say gossiping, because we do that in our comments as well.

So what did you learn in the last book you read/edited/reviewed? Or what tid-bit of information did you put in your latest WIP?

For me, it was that you can get a black cherry hair dye, it isn’t one I have come across in my town, so I searched a popular online company, famous for selling books, and found some. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Meet Kim

I should start off by telling you how much I hate to talk about myself. 🙂 So, let’s see. Where should I start?

At the age of 39, I decided to keep my promise to my grandmother and I started college. I am majoring in English and working on a certificate in Women’s Studies as well. As a woman who grew up seeing herself as less than, because she wasn’t the most beautiful, it is important for me to show young women you don’t have to have supermodel looks or be a size 2 to be beautiful. (http://iambeautifulat.blogspot.com) This blog is one of my passions. It started as a college project and it has become a vital part of my life.

Sleepy weiner           003

I am the mama to 2 beautiful canine kids. Valentine is a German Shepherd and she will celebrate her 15th birthday in January. Diesel is an almost 5 year old English Mastiff who is a Mama’s Boy through and through. They both spend their days sleeping while I write my stories.

Oh, there’s another element to me 🙂 I’m an author. I write paranormal romance books which are set in the most beautiful part of Michigan, the Upper Peninsula. Currently, there are two stories out there, but I am working on so many different projects, there will be plenty coming in the future.

My life has been so blessed and I believe in spreading the love around. 2013 is my year and the changes that have happened so far just prove it. Please join us as we take this new adventure to the highest heights! I promise the ride will be worth it.

Hollie’s Rabble

2012-05-20 16.13.19

This photo is a few years out of date. The kids are a bit bigger, but I like it. This was a fun morning and we don’t often get chance to all play together like that anymore.

So to introductions, my Smurf usually goes by the name of Rob. Having arthritis in his spine, he fully understands how hard and painful life can be. He also loves photography you can find some of his photos on flicker http://www.flickr.com/photos/gloverracing/. As you can see, we like car racing (it’s how we met), but we are moving more towards horse riding. We all enjoy riding and horses are way more fun to cuddle than a car.

My oldest child is my only girl, Jojo is 18 and already living in the big wide world. She spends her time between here and London, where her military boyfriend lives.

Then, there are my boys. Brandon is the biggest one. He is coming up 16 and works at the local British Horse Society Stable. He is training to be a stable hand and riding instructor. The youngest two are Josh (13) and Stephen (11). Stephen starts high school in a few weeks. I can’t believe my baby is getting so big. Both the boys are also learning to ride and will be joining the BHS pony club to learn all about horse care. Then, it looks like I’ll have to buy a horse. Although they keep hinting at one each, all my reasons for not having too many pets is followed by a “but they can live and work at the stable”.

So that’s my rabble, and me, well I’m not sure about me, a lot has changed for me over the last six years. My most exciting news is I have just finished (and passed) my BA in Media. No, that isn’t journalism. Media is communication, books, films, internet, everything, I could talk for hours about my degree, but the best part was my dissertation. Romance Reading in the Twenty-First Century, I loved doing the research and the results are amazing. But that’s a post for another day.

Have a Great Day

Hollie
